JUMPING UP · It is natural for dogs to want to jump to greet people. Often they learn that they can get a lot of attention by jumping up and grabbing at hands and clothing. Even negative attention such as your shouting or pushing the dog away can be rewarding! · It is possible to train your dog not to jump up but it is important that ALL members of your family and ALL of your visitors comply. · Keep a container of dog treats just outside your front door. When visitors come to your home they should each put a few treats in their pockets before coming in. · Everyone should ignore ALL of your dogs attempts to gain attention. Everyone should turn their backs on your dog and remain still and TOTALLY IGNORE your dog (pretend he is not even there.) Ignoring means: NO LOOKING AT YOUR DOG NO TALKING TO YOUR DOG NO TOUCHING YOUR DOG · Your dog will eventually get fed up with being ignored and will either sit down or wander off. At this point you (or your visitors) can quietly call your dog forward and ask him to sit. Then calmly stroke him and give him treats but ONLY while he stays calm. If he starts to jump up or get over excited then you must ignore him again.
